Thorius
Thorius, also known as minute salamanders, pigmy salamanders, or Mexican pigmy salamanders, is a genus of salamanders in the family Plethodontidae. They are endemic to Mexico and found in southern Veracruz and Puebla to Guerrero and Oaxaca.

Herpetologie Mexicaanse dwergsalamanders[1] (Thorius) zijn een geslacht van salamanders uit de familie longloze salamanders (Plethodontidae). De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door Edward Drinker Cope in 1869. Er zijn 29 soorten die endemisch zijn in Mexico.[2] Mexicaanse dwergsalamanders behoren tot de kleinste salamanders. De soort Thorius troglodytes wordt beschouwd als een van de grotere vertegenwoordigers en bereikt een lichaamslengte tot 2,5 centimeter inclusief staart. De kleinste soorten worden tot 17 mm lang, zoals Thorius arboreus.[3] Soorten Van alle bekende soorten is ruim de helft pas in de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw wetenschappelijk beschreven. De soorten Thorius longicaudus, Thorius pinicola en Thorius tlaxiacus werden in 2016 voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven.[4] In oudere bronnen wordt daarom een lager soortenaantal vermeld. Thorius, also known as minute salamanders, pigmy salamanders, or Mexican pigmy salamanders, is a genus of salamanders in the family Plethodontidae. They are endemic to Mexico and found in southern Veracruz and Puebla to Guerrero and Oaxaca.
Thorius is the most species-rich tropical salamander genus relative to its distribution area (Bolitoglossa and Pseudoeurycea have many more species but also much wider distribution areas). It is not uncommon for two or even three species to occur in the same place. In such cases, species have diverged in terms of body size and dentition, apparently facilitating niche differentiation.
