È un metallo lucido, grigio-argenteo, molto tenero (si può tagliare con un coltello): è duttile e facilmente lavorabile. In aria secca ha una certa resistenza alla corrosione. In natura il tulio è composto interamente dell'unico isotopo stabile 169Tm.
