It was one of the municipalities with a large majority of German speakers in the mostly French speaking Canton of Fribourg. On 1 January 2026 it was merged into the municipality of Gurmels.

==History== Ulmiz is first mentioned in 1200 as Hulmeis. In 1390 it was mentioned in French as Ormeis.
