After a flight back home, Sam Hendrix returns with a doll he innocently acquired along the way. As it turns out, the doll is actually stuffed with heroin, and a group of criminals led by the ruthless Roat has followed Hendrix back to his place to retrieve it. When Hendrix leaves for business, the crooks make their move -- and find his blind wife, Susy, alone in the apartment. Soon, a life-threatening game begins between Susy and the thugs.

The picture was directed by Terence Young and produced by Mel Ferrer, from a screenplay by Robert Carrington and Jane-Howard Carrington based on the 1966 play by Frederick Knott. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and Jack Weston appear in supporting roles.

Hepburn earned nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her performance, while Zimbalist was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. The film is ranked number 55 on the American Film Institute's 2001 "100 Years...100 Thrills" list, and its climax is ranked tenth on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
