== Geography == Yatsushiro is located at the geographic center of Kyushu, in between Kumamoto and Ashikita. The western part is a plain facing the Shiranui Sea (Yatsushiro Sea), and most of it has expanded through several rounds of reclamation since the Edo period. The eastern and southern areas are deep mountainous areas of the Kyushu Mountains.
