==Toponymy== The name Zigoitia is usually described as consisting of the Basque elements (an aspirated variant of , meaning "bridge") and "upper". The toponym , meaning "Upper Zuffia", is attested in the medieval ''; while the neighboring municipality of Zuia, located in a valley, corresponds to , meaning "Lower Zuffia".
