Barrackpore, also spelled as Barrackpur, is a city and a municipality in Kolkata of North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the Barrackpore subdivision. The city is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
==Etymology== The name Barrackpore may have originated from the English word barracks, as it was the site of the first cantonment of the British East India Company. Alternatively, the Ain-i-Akbari suggests that the name comes from "Barbakpur". Manasa Vijay, written by Bipradas Pipilai, refers to Talpukur (a place in Barrackpore) as "Charnak".
