KGaA mit Sitz in Gütersloh ist ein internationaler Medienkonzern; sie ist auch in der Dienstleistungsbranche und im Bildungsbereich aktiv.Carl Bertelsmann gründete das Unternehmen als Buchverlag im Jahr 1835. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entwickelte sich Bertelsmann unter der Führung von Reinhard Mohn vom mittelständischen Betrieb zum Großkonzern, der neben Büchern auch Fernsehen, Radio, Musik, Zeitschriften und Dienstleistungen anbietet.Bertelsmann ist ein nicht börsennotiertes, kapitalmarktorientiertes Unternehmen, das maßgeblich von der Eigentümerfamilie Mohn kontrolliert wird. Wesentliche Unternehmensbereiche sind die RTL Group, Penguin Random House, BMG, Arvato, die Bertelsmann Printing Group, Bertelsmann Education Group und Bertelsmann Investments. Seit den 1960er Jahren ist Bertelsmann in den Vereinigten Staaten präsent und hat heute operative Geschäfte in rund 50 Ländern weltweit.
