Javel — местечко около Парижа, где впервые стали изготовлять эту воду в 1792 году, «жавель») — раствор солей калия хлорноватистой и соляной кислот (KOCl + KCl). Жавелевая вода была впервые получена французским химиком Луи Бертолле, изучавшим тогда открытый элементарный хлор.
