CMM ocenia praktyki stosowane podczas produkcji. Model ocenia proces w skali pięciostopniowej – od chaotycznego (nic nie jest sterowane ani kontrolowane), aż do ścisłego, zdyscyplinowanego procesu uwzględniającego wszystkie potrzebne aspekty.
