Carl Ludwig

Carl Ludwig was a Prussian physician, physiologist, anatomist, and university teacher, born in Witzenhausen on 29 December 1816. He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree, having studied at the University of Marburg and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, and worked in the field of physiology at Leipzig University, the University of Zurich, the University of Marburg, and the University of Vienna. He wrote in German and Latin, and his students included Conrad Eckhard, his doctoral student, and Theodor Leber.

Ludwig was a member of the Royal Society, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and received the Copley Medal and the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art. He died in Leipzig on 23 April 1895.
