Door een coördinatenstelsel wordt een vlak of (algemener) een ruimte zo ingedeeld, dat de plaats van ieder punt in dat vlak of die ruimte eenduidig wordt bepaald door een aantal getallen, die coördinaten van dat punt heten. Coördinaten worden bij een rechtlijnig coördinatenstelsel aangegeven door coördinaatassen met waarden erlangs. Eventueel worden niveaulijnen toegevoegd. Bij kromlijnige coördinaten, zoals lengte- en breedtegraad op een wereldkaart, zijn de niveaulijnen extra belangrijk.
