Con il termine pesci, dal latino piscis, si intende un gruppo eterogeneo di organismi vertebrati fondamentalmente acquatici, coperti di scaglie e dotati di pinne, che respirano attraverso le branchie. Con oltre 32 000 specie per ora conosciute, coprono quasi il 50% del totale delle specie del subphylum vertebrata. Nelle vecchie tassonomie assurgevano a classe sistematica dei vertebrati, mentre la zoologia moderna non riconosce ai pesci valore di categoria tassonomica, ma un insieme di tratti esteriori evolutivamente convergenti o costanti, come l'idrodinamicità e la presenza di pinne, che permettono loro di muoversi nell'elemento fluido con particolare efficacia, oltre alla respirazione prevalentemente branchiale dell'ossigeno disciolto. Tali dati comuni fanno tuttora variamente utilizzare la denominazione, anche se in ambito non tassonomico, ad esempio in itticoltura e ecologia. Il più antico pesce fossile è lo Haikouichthys vissuto durante il Cambriano 500 milioni di anni fa, imparentato con le lamprede.Il più grande pesce vivente è lo squalo balena (Rhincodon typus) che può raggiungere i 20 metri di lunghezza e pesare fino a 34 tonnellate, il Paedocypris progenetica invece è il pesce più piccolo vivente, infatti i maschi raggiungono i 10 mm e le femmine possono essere lunghe solo 7,9 mm.
