(b Wörlitz, 6 July 1739; d Dessau, 28 Feb 1796). German composer and violinist. He served at the Dessau court from 1762; after studying with C. P. E. Bach and F. Benda, he returned there, becoming court music director in 1775 and establishing Dessau as a vital musical centre. His large output includes chamber and keyboard music, dramatic works and sacred and secular vocal pieces.
