Harry Bateman

Harry Bateman was a mathematician, physicist, and university teacher born in Manchester in 1882. He held citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States. His professional career included positions at Johns Hopkins University, the California Institute of Technology, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of Liverpool. He was educated at The Manchester Grammar School, Trinity College, and Johns Hopkins University, where his doctoral advisor was Frank Morley.

Bateman’s work focused on mathematics, mathematical analysis, and mathematical physics. Notable contributions include the Bateman Equation and conformal symmetry. He authored works such as *Differential Equations* and *The Mathematical Analysis of Electrical and Optical Wave-motion on the Basis of Maxwell's Equations*. His doctoral students included Howard P. Robertson, Clifford Truesdell, and Albert George Wilson.

He was a member of the Royal Society, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Mathematical Society, and the American Philosophical Society. Awards received included the Smith's Prize and the Josiah Willard Gibbs Lectureship. He died of thrombosis in Pasadena in 1946. His archives are held at the California Institute of Technology.
