ICQ was a cross-platform instant messaging (IM) and VoIP client founded in June 1996 by Yair Goldfinger, Sefi Vigiser, Amnon Amir, Arik Vardi, and Arik's father, Yossi Vardi. The name ICQ derives from the English phrase "I Seek You". Originally developed by the Israeli company Mirabilis in 1996, the client was bought by AOL in 1998, and then by Mail.Ru Group (now VK) in 2010.
ICQ, whose name stands for "I Seek You," is an instant messaging and voice-calling software that was created in 1996 and became one of the early platforms for people to communicate online across different types of computers. The service mattered historically because it pioneered internet-based communication for everyday users and changed hands several times among major tech companies, including AOL and later VK, reflecting its significance in the digital landscape.
