Joseph Bédier

Joseph Bédier was a French professor, literary critic, philologist, and romanist. Born Charles Marie Joseph Bédier in the 6th arrondissement of Paris in 1864, he worked in literary studies and Romance studies. He served as a professor at the Collège de France, the University of Fribourg, the University of Caen Normandy, and the Sorbonne. His notable works include *Gaston Paris*, *Tristan agus Iseut*, *Tristan ménestrel*, *Romań o Tristanovi a Izolde*, and *סיפורם המופלא של טריסטן ואיסולד*.

Bédier was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Medieval Academy of America, the Romanian Academy, and the American Philosophical Society. He received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour and the Grand Prix Gobert, and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote in French and spoke French, German, Italian, and Spanish. He died of a stroke in Le Grand-Serre in 1938.
