Karl Lachmann

Karl Konrad Friedrich Wilhelm Lachmann was a German grammarian, translator, classical philologist, and university teacher. Born in Brunswick in 1793, he was a citizen of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. He received his education at the University of Göttingen and Leipzig University. His professional career included employment at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he taught students such as Clemens Friedrich Meyer and Karl Weinhold.

Lachmann’s field of work encompassed German studies and classical philology. He wrote in German and spoke Middle High German, German, and Latin. He was a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Academy of Sciences of Turin. His notable works include *Sex. Aurelii Propertii Elegiae*, *Albii Tibulli Carmina*, *In T. Lucretii Cari De rerum natura libros commentarius*, *Wundersame und ergötzliche Historie von Till Eulenspiegel, dem Schalksnarren*, and *Carmina*. He died in Berlin in 1851.
