Meyer Schapiro

Meyer Schapiro was an American art historian, historian, university teacher, and art theorist. Born in Šiauliai in 1904 and dying in New York City in 1996, he held the position of professor at Columbia University and New York University. He was educated at Columbia University and spoke English, Lithuanian, and French.

Schapiro received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the MacArthur Fellows Program award, and the Aby Warburg Prize. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Medieval Academy of America, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Philosophical Society. His notable works include *Vico Sur les Arts Visuels*, *The Late Works of Van Gogh*, *Saint-remy and Auvers (An Express Art Book)*, *Vincent Van Gogh (Great Art of the Ages Series)*, and *The Parma Ildefonsus*. He also authored text for *Paul Cezanne*. His student was Martha Edelheit.
