Michael Ruse

Michael Ruse (1940–2024) was a British philosopher and university teacher born in Birmingham. He worked in the fields of philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, and analytic philosophy. Ruse was educated at McMaster University and the University of Bristol. He held a position at Florida State University and worked in Guelph. His worldview was agnostic, and he was associated with the movements of atheism and Western philosophy.

Ruse was a member of the Royal Society of Canada and received the Guggenheim Fellowship. He authored 122 works, including *Defining Darwin*, *Debating Darwin*, the *Cambridge Handbook of Evolutionary Ethics*, and the *Cambridge Companion to the 'Origin of Species'*. He also produced a special issue on Ernst Mayr at ninety. Ruse spoke English and died in November 2024.
