Mae'r banadlau i gyd (yn cynnwys Laburnum ac eithin) yn gysefin i Ewrop, Gogledd Affrica a de-orllewin Asia, gyda'r amrywiaeth fwyaf yn ardal y Môr Canoldir. Creodd y dewiniaid Gwydion ap Dôn a Math y ferch hudolus Blodeuwedd o flodau'r derw, banadl ac erwain, i fod yn wraig i Leu Llaw Gyffes.
