Tomi Ungerer

Jean Thomas Ungerer, known as Tomi Ungerer, was a French and Irish writer, illustrator, children’s writer, and photographer. Born in Strasbourg in 1931, he died in Cork in 2019. He worked in New York City, Cork, and Strasbourg. His professional fields included visual arts, book illustration, caricature, and graphic design. He wrote in French, English, German, and Alsatian. His genres encompassed children’s literature and erotic literature.

Ungerer received the Knight, Officer, and Commander distinctions of the Legion of Honour, as well as the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg. His works are held in the collections of the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, the Musée Tomi Ungerer / Centre international de l'illustration, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His archives are located at the Musée Tomi Ungerer / Centre international de l'illustration. He had four children.
