==Toponymy== The name of the town comes from the Māori language. The components of the name are (meaning sky) and (meaning wellness). The name can be interpreted as meaning "good weather", "a sick person recovering from an illness", or "a day of wellbeing." The origin of the name is not clear, but may originate with the Māori name for Brachyglottis repanda, or refer to a peace agreement between Ngāi Tahu and Kāti Māmoe.
