Samuel Eilenberg

Samuel Eilenberg, also known as Sammy Eilenberg, was a mathematician, topologist, university teacher and art collector born on 30 September 1913 in Warsaw and died on 30 January 1998 in New York City. He held citizenship of Poland and the United States, was educated at the University of Warsaw, and studied under Kazimierz Kuratowski and Karol Borsuk. He worked in topology, mathematics, collecting and visual arts.

Eilenberg was employed by the University of Michigan, Columbia University, Princeton University and Indiana University. He is known for the Eilenberg–MacLane space and the Eilenberg–Steenrod axioms, and received the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is recognised in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection.
