Die Gemeinde Söhrewald liegt im Bereich großer Waldgebiete des Staatsforstes Wellerode und des Staatsforstes Eiterhagen. Bis in die 1960er Jahre wurden die dortigen Braunkohlevorkommen abgebaut. Der Gemeindesitz befindet sich im Ortsteil Wellerode (Schulstraße 8). Am 1.12.1970 im Zuge der hessischen Gebietsreform gebildeter Zusammenschluss der Gemeinden Eiterhagen, Wattenbach und Wellerode. Sitz der Gemeindeverwaltung ist Wellerode.
