Известны в ископаемом состоянии из отложений начиная с позднего мелового периода; наибольший расцвет семейства приходится на третичный период. Популярная группа у коллекционеров раковин моллюсков. Объект промысла у народов Западной Африки, Австралии и Юго-Восточной Азии — мясо моллюсков используется в пищу.
