Alexander Friedmann

Alexander Friedmann (1888–1925) was a Russian and Soviet mathematician, physicist, meteorologist, and scientist. Born in Saint Petersburg, he was educated at The Second Saint Petersburg Gymnasium. His professional career included positions at St. Petersburg State Transport University, Saint Petersburg Mining University, Perm State National Research University, and Saint Petersburg State University. He worked in the fields of theoretical physics, geophysics, cosmology, and mathematics.

Friedmann participated in World War I, holding the rank of praporshchik. He received several honors, including the Order of St. George, Gold Sword for Bravery, Order of St. Vladimir, and the Lenin Prize. His doctoral advisor included Vladimir Steklov and Paul Ehrenfest. He supervised doctoral students such as George Gamow and Nikolai Kochin, and taught Vladimir Fock.

He spoke Russian and German. Friedmann died in Saint Petersburg and was buried in the Smolenskoye Orthodox Cemetery. His published works include *Die Welt als Raum und Zeit* (1923), *Auserwählt?*, and *Designs for the construction of markets, warehouses, and sheds*.
