Andrew Majda

Andrew Joseph Majda was an American mathematician and university teacher born in East Chicago in 1949. He was educated at Purdue University and Stanford University. His academic career included teaching positions at Princeton University, the University of California, Los Angeles, New York University, and the University of California, Berkeley.

Majda was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the American Mathematical Society. He received the Josiah Willard Gibbs Lectureship, the Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics, and the John von Neumann Prize. He was recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection.

His doctoral advisor was Ralph S. Phillips, and his doctoral student was Andrea Bertozzi. He had an Erdős number of 3. Majda died on March 12, 2021.
