Das Wort Architektur (von lateinisch architectura ‚Baukunst‘; dieses von altgriechisch ἀρχιτεκτονία architektonía mit derselben Bedeutung) bezeichnet im weitesten Sinne die handwerkliche Beschäftigung und ästhetische Auseinandersetzung des Menschen mit dem gebauten Raum. Planvolles Entwerfen, Gestalten und Konstruieren von Bauwerken ist der zentrale Inhalt der Architektur. Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Definitionen des Begriffes, die der Architektur verschiedene Aufgaben, Inhalte und Bedeutungen zuschreiben. Einige werden im Folgenden dargestellt. Bereits Vitruv sprach von der „Mutter aller Künste“, womit sowohl die zeitliche Abfolge als auch die rangliche Einstufung der Architektur gegenüber Bildhauerei und Malerei gemeint sein kann. Im klassischen Verständnis seit Vitruvs De Architectura beruht Architektur auf den drei Prinzipien Stabilität (Firmitas), Nützlichkeit (Utilitas) und Anmut/Schönheit (Venustas).
