Ary Scheffer

Ary Scheffer was a painter, sculptor, draftsperson, and lithographer associated with the Romanticism movement. He held citizenship in France and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. His artistic output included history painting and portraits, with notable works such as *Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta appraised by Dante and Virgil*. He worked in Dordrecht, Paris, Amsterdam, and Great Britain.

Scheffer studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin and was influenced by Théodore Géricault and François Gérard. He taught Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, Charles Landelle, Claudius Popelin, and Ange Tissier. He was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. His honors included the titles of Officer and Commander of the Legion of Honour.

Born in Dordrecht on 10 February 1795, he died in Argenteuil on 15 June 1858. He is buried at Montmartre Cemetery. His mother was Cornelia Scheffer, and his child shared that name. His sibling was Hendrik Scheffer.
