Nemeckým výsadkárom, ktorí sa v lete 1940 klesali cez roztrúsené biele mraky, museli Normanské ostrovy pripadať ako hŕstka tmavozelených trávnatých plôch chaoticky roztrúsených v modrom mori. Ich hnedé lemovanie naznačovalo výrazný rozdiel medzi prílivom a odlivom. Čím nižšie výsadkári klesali, tým bolo zrejmejšie, že hlavným zdrojom obživy ostrovanov je poľnohospodárstvo bez použitia ťažkých strojov. Krajinu tvorili mierne sa zvažujúce kopce bez náznaku hôr alebo zalesnených oblastí. V plytkých zátokách sa rozprestierali vybielené dediny a niekoľko väčších prístavných miest s nábrežiami a mólami.
