Engelbert Humperdinck ( German: [ˈɛŋl̩bɛʁt ˈhʊmpɐdɪŋk]; 1 September 1854 – 27 September 1921) was a German composer. He is known widely for his opera Hansel and Gretel (1893).

He has been described by AllMusic as a prominent performer of middle-of-the-road ballads and achieved international prominence in 1967 with his recording of "Release Me". Humperdinck began his career in the late 1950s under the name "Gerry Dorsey", but achieved commercial success after 1965 when he partnered with manager Gordon Mills
