Frederick Mosteller

Frederick Mosteller, born Charles Frederick Mosteller in 1916, was an American statistician, mathematician, and university teacher. He was educated at Princeton University and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. His professional career included positions at Harvard University and the United States Department of War. He died in Falls Church in 2006 from sepsis, resulting from natural causes, and is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Mosteller received the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Wilks Memorial Award. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Philosophical Society. His doctoral advisors were Samuel S. Wilks and John Tukey, and his doctoral students included Stephen E. Fienberg and Persi Diaconis. He held an Erdős number of 2 and spoke English.
