Gene E. Likens

Gene E. Likens is an American ecologist and writer born in Pierceton in 1935. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and serves as a chairperson at Cornell University. Likens speaks English and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

His notable works include *Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics*, *Lake Ecosystem Ecology*, *An Ecosystem Approach to Aquatic Ecology*, *Humans as Components of Ecosystems*, and *Biogeochemistry of Inland Waters*. Likens has received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the National Medal of Science, and the Blue Planet Prize.
