George Enesco

George Enescu (1881–1955) was a Romanian and French composer, violinist, pianist, and conductor. He was educated at the Conservatoire de Paris and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he studied under Gabriel Fauré, Robert Fuchs, Joseph Hellmesberger, and Jules Massenet. His musical output included works in the genres of opera, symphony, chamber music, and piano. Notable compositions include *Œdipe* and the *Roumanian rhapsody*.

Enescu held positions at the Conservatoire de Paris, the École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, and the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. He taught students including Marius Constant, Yehudi Menuhin, Christian Ferras, and Ivry Gitlis. He was married to Marie Cantacuzène and received the award of Knight of the Legion of Honour.

He died in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and is buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery. Enescu spoke Romanian and French.
