Itanium (; ) is a discontinued family of 64-bit Intel microprocessors that implement the Intel Itanium architecture (formerly called IA-64). The Itanium architecture originated at Hewlett-Packard (HP), and was later jointly developed by HP and Intel. Launching in June 2001, Intel initially marketed the processors for enterprise servers and high-performance computing systems. In the concept phase, engineers said "we could run circles around PowerPC...we could kill the x86". L´Itanium est un processeur 64 bits développé par Intel en coopération avec différents constructeurs informatiques (HP, Bull, etc.), visant initialement à remplacer l'architecture x86/CISC. L'architecture Itanium, nommée IA-64, est basée sur la technologie EPIC (Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing), considérée comme le successeur du RISC. HP a fortement contribué au développement du processeur afin qu'il remplace ses propres PA-RISC et DEC Alpha (architecture héritée du rachat de Compaq, elle-même héritée du rachat de Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)).
