James H. Wilkinson

James Hardy Wilkinson, also known as Jim Wilkinson, was a British mathematician and computer scientist. He was born in Strood in 1919 and died in Teddington in 1986 from a myocardial infarction. His professional work focused on numerical linear algebra and numerical analysis. He was educated at Trinity College and worked at the National Physical Laboratory, Stanford University, Fort Halstead, and the University of Michigan.

Wilkinson was a member of the Royal Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the Association for Computing Machinery. He received the Turing Award, the John von Neumann Prize, and the Chauvenet Prize, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. His archives are held at the Computer History Museum. He spoke English and had an Erdős number of 3.
