Peter served in the army during the 1939/1946 war for six years in Nigeria and Burma. He subsequently became an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon in Oxford, but had a consuming interest in music from his youth. At various times he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and orchestration under Dr. Reginald Johnson and, later, piano under Vivian Langrish and Ruth Harte. Scarlet and Black, an opera, was written between 1967 and 2004 and had been a part-time project, acompanying his professional medi
