Er war von 1610 bis 1616 als Schiffsoffizier, Steuermann und Kapitän an fünf Expeditionen beteiligt, die nach der Nordwestpassage suchten und dabei Küsten, Meerengen und Meeresarme der kanadischen Arktis erkundeten und kartierten.
