Bei ortsabhängigen Funktionen gibt sie an, bei welcher Höhe sich die Funktion um den Wert der eulerschen Zahl e verringert. Ebenso ist es die Höhe, der eine konstante Funktion entspräche, würde sie sich nicht exponentiell verringern, d. h. Wert des bestimmten Integrals über die Funktion: und bzw.
