Der Steinwald ist ein bis zu 946 m ü. NHN hohes Mittelgebirge im Regierungsbezirk Oberpfalz, im Nordosten von Bayern (Deutschland). Naturräumlich gehört er zur Haupteinheit Hohes Fichtelgebirge (394). Nach einer weiteren Untergliederung durch das Bayerische Landesamt für Umwelt (LfU) bildet er das Kerngebiet der Einheit Steinwald (394-C), die auch den Reichsforst im Nordosten sowie, rechts der Fichtelnaab, den Armesberg und seine südöstlichen Nachbarerhebungen im Südwesten enthält. Im Jahr 1970 wurde der heute 246 km² große Naturpark Steinwald gegründet.
