Walter Baade

Walter Baade (1893–1960) was a German astronomer and astrophysicist. He was educated at the University of Göttingen and the University of Münster. His professional affiliations included the Mount Wilson Observatory, Palomar Observatory, and the University of Göttingen. Baade was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony.

He received the Henry Norris Russell Lectureship, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Bruce Medal. Among his doctoral students were Halton Arp and Allan Sandage. Baade spoke English and German. He died in Göttingen.
