Alexandre Herculano

Alexandre Herculano (1810–1877) was a Portuguese journalist, poet, historian, and writer associated with the Romanticism movement. Born in Lisbon and dying in Santarém, he was a citizen of the Kingdom of Portugal. His professional fields included belletristic literature, poetry, journalism, and history. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin.

Herculano’s notable works include *Historia de Portugal desde o começo da monarchia até o fim do reinado de Affonso III*, *Historia da origem e establecimento da inquisição em Portugal*, *Historia de Portugal*, *Cartas de A. Herculano*, and *O bobo*. He is described by sources such as the *Nordisk familjebok*, the *Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary*, the *Jewish Encyclopedia of Brockhaus and Efron*, and the *Encyclopædia Britannica* 11th edition. He wrote in Portuguese and is buried at the Jerónimos Monastery.
