Ben Roy Mottelson

Ben Roy Mottelson (1926–2022) was an American and Danish nuclear physicist and university teacher. Born in Chicago, he resided in Copenhagen, where he also died. He was educated at Purdue University and Harvard University, with Julian Schwinger serving as his doctoral advisor. Mottelson worked at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Mottelson received the Nobel Prize in Physics and the Atoms for Peace Award. His notable works include *Nuclear structure* and *Lectures on selected topics in nuclear structure*. He spoke English and Danish.
