With a population of 104 inhabitants, it is by the least populated municipality in the federal state. The coat of arms of Böllen were granted in 1902. Historische Namensformen: in Belna superiori 1352 Geschichte: 1352 in Belna superiori und inferiori, Ortsname vom Böllenbach, vielleicht vorgermanisch. Vallis Bellinowa, in St. Trudperter Urkunden auf das 12. Jahrhundert gefälscht, dürfte nicht Böllen, vielmehr die Willnau (Obermünstertal, Gemeinde Münstertal/Schwarzwald, Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald) bezeichnen. Ober- und Niederböllen hatten je eigene Gemarkungen und gehörten zur sanktblasianischen Talvogtei und Ammannei Schönau. In badischer Zeit seit 1809 selbstständige Gemeinde im Amtsbezirk Schönau, ab 1924 Schopfheim, 1936/39 Landkreis Lörrach. Kirche und Schule: Die Katholiken gehörten stets zu Schönau. Die Evangelischen gehören zur Filialkirchengemeinde Schönau.
