OverviewAI-generated
Evolution is a biological process and a pattern in nature. It is also classified as a field of study. The process is caused by genetic drift, with immediate causes including natural selection, survival of the fittest, and selective breeding. It possesses the characteristic of evolutionary pressure.
The subject is studied by phylogenetics, the theory of evolution, and evolutionary biology. Charles Darwin is identified as the discoverer or inventor. Evolution follows Lamarckism and is the opposite of creationism. It is described by sources such as The Catholic Encyclopedia, Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, and the Encyclopædia Britannica 11th edition.
The topic is referenced by 5,872 other encyclopedia articles. PubMed lists a count of 914,360 for the query. The subject is maintained by WikiProject Evolutionary biology, WikiProject Biology, WikiProject History of Science, and WikiProject Tree of Life.
