Der Gemeindesitz befindet sich im Ortsteil Hoof (Korbacher Straße 300). Verkehrsmäßig ist das Gemeindegebiet sowohl mit dem Raum Kassel als auch mit dem Raum Wolfhagen verbunden. Am 1.8.1972 im Zuge der hessischen Gebietsreform gebildeter Zusammenschluss der Gemeinden Elgershausen und Hoof. Letztere bestand seit dem 31.12.1971 aus den Gemeinden Breitenbach, Elmshagen, Hoof und Martinhagen, die nun wieder eigene Ortsteile der Gemeinde Schauenburg wurden. Sitz der Gemeindeverwaltung ist Hoof.
