Liberty Hyde Bailey

Liberty Hyde Bailey was an American botanist, writer, horticulturist, and botanical collector. Born in 1858 and dying in 1954, he was educated at Michigan State University and employed by Cornell University. His professional focus was botany, and he was influenced by Charles Darwin. Bailey wrote in English and had one child, Ethel Zoe Bailey.

He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He received the Veitch Memorial Medal and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His notable works include *Hortus Third a Concise Dictionary of Plants*, *Evolution of Our Native Fruits*, *Winter Muskmelons*, *Apple Tree*, and *Outlaw's Bridge Universalist Church*. His collections are held at the National Herbarium of Victoria, the Natural History Museum, and the Bishop Museum. He died in Ithaca.
