Multiple sclerose of multipele sclerose (MS) is een aandoening van het centrale zenuwstelsel en waarschijnlijk een auto-immuunaandoening. De ziekte wordt getypeerd door de aantasting van de myelineschede van de zenuwvezels door afweercellen van het immuunsysteem in een willekeurig aandoend patroon. De myelineschede is een isolerende laag rondom de zenuwuitlopers, meer bepaald de axonen. Door de aantasting van de isolerende laag raakt de impulsgeleiding van de zenuw verstoord, waardoor bij de patiënt neurologische stoornissen zoals krachtvermindering kunnen ontstaan. De aantasting van de myeline wordt demyelinisatie genoemd.
